Why You Should Blog, Twitter, and Comment

What has joining the online discussion about education and technology done for me? How has writing here changed me or the way I approach my work? Have I learned anything? I know this for sure……I know less than I thought I did (I heard those snickers by the way!). So what is the point you may ask? Education is about being willing to learn, being willing to take risks and acknowledging that we do not have all the answers. Not only do we have to admit to not “knowing” it all, but we need to be eager to look for the answers. Teachers must model this for their students. Teaching is more about guiding students to learn new skills for themselves as it is about telling students about what they should know. Today’s students need to know how to research, work with a team, how to think critically and find information when they need it. All learners need to be able to read, reflect and respond. I think the most important thing that I have learned is that I must continue to learn! I know now that no teacher/administrator has learned everything they need to know about being an effective educator. We need to learn everyday. What we learn today changes what we will do tomorrow……. principals and teachers are in the best position to model this for the community.

What a welcome perspective from someone at the “top” of a school: You still recognize the need to learn! Thanks for your honesty, your willingness to improve, and your openness about needing time to read, reflect, and respond even when your days are long and personal time is almost nil. Thank you for being an inspiration to so many!

      Rusha,
Thank you for your comment. I love learning from my colleagues using social media. I look forward to learning from you and your contributions to the discussion!

  2. Great blog post! I love your line that, “We need to learn everyday.” I couldn’t agree with you more, and that’s why I love the connections that I’ve made on Twitter. The discussions that I have there everyday, not to mention the ones that I have with my colleagues and students at school, allow me to learn something new everyday. And even though I teach Grade 1, my students constantly teach me “new things,” and I’m thrilled to learn from these six-year-olds as well as from many others too!

      Aviva,
Thank you for responding. This last week I invited a pair of elementary teachers to introduce my teachers to how they use an interactive white board and the Internet in their classrooms. My teachers learned so much. We need to learn from each other and realize that everyone has a contribution!

      • Absolutely! I think that you make a great point here. My principal often has other teachers present at staff meetings too: allows us to learn from each other and see that we each have something to offer too.

Yes, you do lead by example! I thought all principals were like you until I became involved with #edchat. Now I realize that PCHS is lucky to have you. I’ve added this site to my igoogle page and look forward to future posts!

  4. This is a great post! You make good points and it’s funny because I was just blogging about a related topic today. ( http://www.theinspiredclassroom.com/2010/08/master-learner/ ) I’m going to link this post at my website as well…

It’s refreshing to hear a principal acknowledge the need to consistently learn and show evidence of doing it. Fortunately, I work with a principal like that now. In the past, that was not the case. (And I have seen many admins come and go in my 11 years.)

Social media has completely transformed me as an educator and I am looking forward to learning from you. Off to follow you now!

  5. Dave!

Thanks for leading by example on this. As a school principal, one of the first things that I let people know is that I do not know everything. My job is to not know everything, but to help you find answers to your questions. I always need to learn but it is essential that I recognize and share the contributions of my other staff. Great leaders reveal their weaknesses and trust in the people that surround them to make them better. A great teacher also learns from their students. Students love when they can teach their teacher something; we have to make sure that we give them these opportunities.

    Thanks for this post 🙂

  6. I love hearing administrators talk about learning and wanting to continue learning. I have heard from some administrators who feel they know the best way and I do not see them professionally growing. I would love to see this even in the higher education field. I feel too often professors of education do not always go out learn the best strategies and research. Love the line “education is about being willing to learn…” I think this idea of learning would go along with being a master principal!
    Nice Post!

  7. Dave – Thanks for the great post! You are a great model for all of us. I am so excited to share your message with my administrative colleagues in MA to see if we can get more of them involved in these great conversations that we are having.

I couldn’t agree with you more it was for the reasons that you mentioned that I have been more involved by using Twitter over the last few months. I have also created a blog “Principal Post” for me to share some of my ideas. I think that if we as educators want our students to be life long learners they we need to be as well.
    Thanks for the post

  9. I have only recently started to blog and I have to agree, I have learnt so much from other educators that us adding to my understanding of teaching. I also agree that it has made be question my approach and also encouraged me to research new ideas as well as reflecting on what I teach. I look forward to reading your blogs as a key part in my on learning to teach. All I have learnt is that the process doesn’t stop it is an enjoyable continuous process.

Great post! As I finalize plans for opening in-service days, I hope to include many opportunities for teachers and support teams to share and learn from each other. The breadth of knowledge that exists in our organization astounds me! Imagine if we all took a few minutes of each day to “reach out there” and learn new ideas from others outside of our system. That’s what makes Twitter and being part of a PLN so special!

I have long said the day that I stop learning is the day I take my last breath. Having said that, I did not realize so much information could be gained from blogs. While there are some comments to blogs that should be kept to one’s self, I am beginning to recognize the value of blogs as another learning tool.
